Crowns and Glory

Hair. There are so many politics connected to it. Hair, along with fashion, has played a major role in the free expression and freedom of melanated people across the world. Hair, was even used by freedom fighters throughout each era of our history; and, for centuries, it has dictated Native and African tribes, ethnicities, and groups. Today, hair is associated with bonding and nostalgia within the Black communities, particularly in the U.S.

No matter how spiritually connected we are to our hair, it still remains a beauty that is commodified - created for mass profit, stripped of its value by appropriation, and labeled - giving credit to Eurocentric ideals and/or influence.

Hair. Black hair. Ethnic hair. Our hair. Is powerful and beautiful. It’s kinky for the culture. It’s curly for a cause. And it’s nine ether coils act as a conduit for solar energy.
Our hair is an extension of our nervous system, and connects us to the natural world around us.

Today, we celebrate our crowns and all the women connected to its glory.
#CrownsAndGlory sheds light on, and gives love to the styles that make up Black and Brown women’s crowns, and the glory of the Goddesses who style it - twisting, braiding, picking, locking, transforming, even adorning with vibrant colors and exquisite jewels. #CrownsAndGlory is a tribute to the women who have a profession, a mission, and/or a passion for Black women’s hair and all its excellence.
The makeup shown on all of the Goddesses featured, is based on a lack of representation for tribal makeup. We gathered inspiration from tribal markings, indigenous communities, and overall free art expression to show that what is considered acceptable and beautiful should not be limited to European standards of beauty.

We invite you to Join us as we shatter boundaries, old ways of thinking and shift the perspective to appreciate what natural and free forms of beauty look like. 🐘

Please share your own personal crown stories and memories in the comments or your own posts, using the #CrownsAndGlory hashtag. We want to keep the momentum flowing with more Glory to our Crowns. 👸🏾👸🏽👸🏿 We love you all— 💚 The Goddess Collective.
