Slow Hot Wind

As I was painting the portrait of my wife Yulia, I thought that it was wonderful how one person could combine so many cultures. Talysh, Hebrew, Ukranians, Chuvashes have lived in Russia for years. In the early 20th century artists wondered what Russian style actually was. It appeared to be a rich combination of European, Asian, Eastern and Northern cultures. Thus, Russian style in the works of Bilibin, Vrubel, Bakst and others was based on eclectics. I was listening to Henry Mancini’s «Slow Hot Wind» while drawing. It brought the warm copper glow into a gloomy Northern fairy tale.
