Ukhamba Beerworx rebrand

CELEBRATING THE TRADITIONAL LEGACY OF THE NGUNI PEOPLE

Ukhamba Beerworx is a black-owned craft brewery located in Cape Town. The brewery finds its roots deep within the Nguni culture of Southern Afrika and was born from the ritual of sharing umqombothi (a traditional beer).

TASK: To rebrand Ukhamba Beerworx and create a visual language that celebrates the Nguni people and pays tribute to their rich, cultural tradition of sharing umqombothi.

CONCEPT: A Homage to the Past Tribesmen gathering in a circle to share umqombothi from a clay pot known as a Ukhamba is a custom found within the long history of the Southern Afrikan Nguni people. It is a rite that has evolved over the years while remaining true to its past, and one that continues to this day. With our rebrand approach, we wanted to create a homage to the past while also acknowledging the ritual of the present. This way, when you sip Ukhamba with friends and strangers, you are not just taking part in a centuries-old tradition. With every sip, you are celebrating the legacy of the Nguni people too.

RESULT: We were able to create a logo and a visual language that honoured the Southern Afrikan Nguni people, as well as their culture steeped in rich traditions.
