Book: Still standing Standing still

Industrial monuments have been forgotten monuments for a long time, and to some extent they still are. This is partly because the concept of a monument has for so long been determined primarily by art history. Anyone thinking of a 'monument' is more likely to have in mind a 'beautiful' old building or object than a factory chimney. Around 500 factory chimneys are still standing in the Netherlands today.

Over the years, factory chimneys have undergone a change in function. Apart from the fact that the skyline of a city with factory chimneys evokes a feeling of nostalgia or even melancholy, they also help us to navigate in unfamiliar territory. They serve as landmarks.

Concept
Emphasising the chimney landmark function using supergraphics. These supergraphics depict the industry that took place in the factory.

With the help of a specially developed grid from which graphic forms can be extracted, supergraphics have been placed on forty factory chimneys that represent the industry in an abstract manner.
