Basics of Colorado Chain Laws

Since the beginning of his legal career, attorney Gabriel Schwartz has worked with several Denver-based law offices, including his own practice, Justice for Colorado. Gabriel Schwartz handles personal injury and automobile-related cases from his offices based in Vail Valley and Denver. He specializes in Colorado road regulations, including chain laws.

Due to its snow-heavy winters, the state of Colorado has enacted chain laws since 1996. During the period between September 1st and May 31st, all commercial vehicles must carry suitable tire chains when traversing on Interstate 70 between mile markers 133 and 259. This includes all vehicles that exceed 26,001 pounds or can carry 15 or more non-driving passengers.

When inclement weather strikes, road signs will alert drivers that chain laws are in effect. Alerts are divided into different levels. Single-axle commercial vehicles must chain up during level 1 alerts, and level 2 alerts apply to all commercial vehicles. Violations can result in steep fines and surcharges.
