Cliff Jones Application Project

The City of Atlanta, Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) is seeking an artist to create 30 color drawings or paintings for an exhibition dedicated to the victims of the Atlanta Child Murders. As a part of the application process, they have asked us to create artwork reflecting on the memory of one of the victims, Clifford Jones. Even if I am not selected as the artist to create this project, I felt that developing a process of creation for this project would be great practice for developing my portfolio and exercising my illustration knowledge.

As always, I begin with a sketch. I used the Sketchable App powered by my Microsoft Surface Pro 6 to begin my process.
I prefer the pen tool of Clip Studio Paint for my completed line work, so I made the switch to that program after the sketching process. Clip Studio Paint's pen tool tapers extremely well compared to other programs. I am also interested in the finished product to have a more painted feel than a digital illustration, so I will be completing the project in Clip Studio Paint.
To finish the project, I collapsed all of my remaining layers except the background so that I could blend the line work into the painting process to give it a more painted look. My intention here is to preserve the integrity of the caricature meanwhile giving it a more traditional feeling. After merging the line work with the painting process, I then used various methods to blend the line work into the color choices of the project.
