"Sauf dans rêve".
In 1839, at only 11 years of age and without the family's knowledge, the young Jules Verne embarked on a ship leaving for the Indies. Grabbed again by his very strict father at the first stopover, the boy justifies himself by saying that he wants to bring a coral necklace to his beloved cousin (who lived in the Indies with her family) and insists on continuing the journey. Forced to give up, however, in face of his father's reproaches, he finds himself promising that "he will never travel again except in a dream" ("Je ne voyagerai plus jamais, sauf dans rêve"). Thus was born our narrator of wonders, unfortunate rebel, anomalous traveller, "scholar, explorer of the future, creator of possible worlds, "poet of wonders"".
