Back in early January, in order to see the sunrise on the Basque Country from above, we woke up in the middle of the night and started hiking La Rhune as tacticool operators on a spec op mission in pitch black.
It was super windy and cold and just took the time to appreciate the morning sun starting to glow behind mountains and “UFO-like” lonely cloud.
With the first light, nature slowly awakes, and we were able to cross paths with local wild horse Pottok before reaching the forest on our way down. This is where sun finally fully emerged above mountains, washing over the woods with golden light and warming us after this very cold night (as demonstrated by the frozen grass and beautiful ice crystals which will soon disappear).
It was amazing to see the landscape with changing light, warm tones, winter fog patches, and all what we passed by on our way up by night, without even suspecting their presence, like sheepfolds and land forms.
We arrived at the bottom exhausted but, what a day, what a lovely day!
