Zapatour Chiapas To Mexico City
EZLN
After a long silence, the indigenous people from the Selva Lacandona set out from their isolated lives in order to raise the country’s conscience regarding their plight and other populations. Led by Subcomandante Marcos, the so-called Zapatour begins--from Chiapas to Mexico City. 2001.
Beginning from the village called La Realidad, the tour looks for responses to the problems of the indigenous populations which have been historically neglected. Marcos with his signature pipe like Che Guevara is the icon of the Zapatistas.
“To fight with reason and not with bullets.” With the illusion and the philosophy of Che, Marcos entreats the Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN) to put away their arms.
Riding on school buses and various types of trucks, the  travelers improvise with all types of transport in order to reach the capital.
On his way to Mexico City, Marcos, like a celebrity, passes through various towns. At the very end, the streets of the capital are filled as citizens witness the arrival of the Zapatista caravan.
EZLN
"Never again a Mexico without us." The Zapatistas display patriotic symbols to demonstrate that they, too, are part of the Mexican population.
Indeed, the Federal Police (PFP) guards escort the Zapatistas to San Cristobal de las Casas which serves as a the first of many meeting points of the EZLN.
