Untold Ethnoastronomical Stories of Africa - Authorial Practice

Rationale
This project offers me the student with an open brief, I am allowed to design anything from an animation, motion graphic, to a video game, and even tactile design elements such as books. The only main requirement is to design something that speaks of untold stories from Africa and creates an immersive narrative. The main issue this project aims to solve is the clear lack of knowledge about cultural beliefs within South Africa. People don’t know enough about their home countries, in this instance Africa, and African cultures. This is a problem as people don’t understand the importance of heritage and lack knowledge of their home towns and cultural beliefs.

In this project I would like to educate people about some of the best traditional African beliefs, specifically those regarding the Sun and Moon, elements which are extremely important in the African culture. In short, this project is concerned with Increasing the representation of African beliefs in mainstream media. The main theories that are used in this project are divided up into three main categories that all work together to create the theoretical foundation for the project.

The first category is called; "Content" and is concerned with the theory on which the project is based. In this case it’s African Ethnoastronomical stories about traditional African beliefs regarding the Sun and Moon specifically. The second category is called 'practical theory' and is concerned with the actual object or artifact that is created to solve the identified problem. In this case it would be an interactive and immersive narrative based puzzle game.

The final category is called 'visual theory' and acts as the theoretical foundation for the visuals of the created artifact, supporting the way everything looks like. I chose to use Afrocentrism to create a realistic African centered artifact

I chose to create a video game as means to solve this problem using mainstream media to reach newer generations who would play this game and teach other people about the stories they learned while playing this game. For the outcomes of this project I also created concept art and matte paintings, combined with my final renders of each level and a proof of concept video showcasing what the game would look like and how it would function had it been published.
