What Is Hepatitis C?
A graduate of Rutgers Medical School in New Jersey, Robert Hindes was a co-founder and the chief medical officer of Trek Therapeutics. Certified in infectious diseases and internal medicine, Robert Hindes has developed drug development strategies for Trek Therapeutics and has supervised the company’s clinical activities. The primary focus of Trek Therapeutics was the development of a safe, highly effective, and affordable all-oral antiviral regimen to combat the high cost of treatment for Hepatitis C--expanding access to drugs for many hepatitis patients.
A liver disease caused by the blood-borne hepatitis C virus, hepatitis C is the leading cause of liver cancer. The most-reported modes of transmission are through contact with small quantities of infected blood--which can occur as a result of unsafe health care practices, unsafe injection practices, the transfusion of unscreened blood or blood products, or unsafe sexual practices. In some cases, chronic hepatitis C leads to the development of cirrhosis and primary liver cancer, which may eventually result in death. The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 366,000 people died from the disease in 2016.
While many people who are infected with hepatitis C exhibit no symptoms of the disease, common symptoms of infection include fatigue, loss of appetite, muscle pain, and fever.
