Wooden Box/Sculpture
Spring 2019
3D Design
For my foundations 3D Design class, one of my projects was to create a wooden box with a fitted or sliding lid using no hardware - wood glue only to bind - and only (roughly) one piece of 12 foot poplar, although we could purchase more wood or use found pieces of scrap wood. These boxes were to be critiqued in class and then cut apart to create a new sculpture that was compelling and incorporated pieces of the original box. This process was aimed at taking planning for a design a step further by designing not only a finished product, but designing the materials for a new sculpture. I opted for a hexagonal box that would not only conceptually tie in with my sculpture, but give me more pieces to work with for the said sculpture.
After creating my box, I destroyed it to create a sculpture of a bee. This sculpture required much less wood than I had initially planned on, so for a base for the sculpture, I created another box. Not only would this give a platform for the sculpture, but it would help to create a practical use for the sculpture.
After sculpting and gluing, I finished the sculpture with a stain to emphasize the contrast between types of wood and give it a more finalized look.
