Deconstructing Place ( Part 2)

About the project

Project intended to contextually read and analyse a place and its socio-spatial structures to understand its evolution using spatial analysis tools and research methodologies. Individually we were given 3 time problems to solve in a duration of 2 days, presented in the form of 8 A4s with only supporting text and visual representation. The challenge was to make our project self explanatory to readers. This project is an extension of the previous project on site documentation(Part 1).

Time Problem-1

Know your Community:
Make people understand the community by interacting and involving with them where they share common interest with each other. It should retain and promote community engagement.

To understand and interact with the community it is better to indulge with them in some activities. A proper community programme is designed where each one of the 5 streets at Jumma masjid road is being dedicated with a specific activity. It will take place on Sunday twice in a month.

Time problem-2

The street vendor project:
Design an intervention for street vendors in your study area. The intervention needs to be portable, use available spaces efficiently and improve the quality of public realm while addressing other relevant issues that impact the street vendors and the community.
Location of street vendors are marked with alphabets. Red mark on some of the sketches indicate the design intervention made to improve their existing sales. A layer of tracing sheet was placed on sketches to show intervention done in their working space.
Map showing location of street vendors at different times of a day.

Time Problem-3

The identity of place:
Using maps, narratives and other techniques, identify the spatial, socio-economic and cultural aspects that define the identity of your study area. Based on your study develop an intervention that give the place and community a stronger sense of identity.
Colour coding the starting and ending of the street gives an identity without disturbing the movement of people and vehicles.
Having local musicians will make the place more vibrant and cheerful which will attract more people to visit the market.
Street art not just add colours to a place but it creates maximum interaction with people. Art can have a social message, cultural art or any kind of an art.
Street lighting helps in highlighting the area. Its visibility is more and people from a particular distance would be curious to know what is happening there. Lighting also allows highlighting the old architecture and landmarks.
