Contemporary forms of heritage—through notions of history, memory, and nostalgia—have played out into narratives linked to a Singapore Story, such as with museums, festivals, SG50, and the boom in heritage trails. Through field specialists, artists, exoticised branding, and alt-heritages, The Substation will examine different modes of contestation, collaboration, and resistance in the cultural production of heritage.
In reaction to our observations on heritage and its industries, the impetus is to fragment and/or deconstruct the popular modes of heritage, and their commodified forms of consumption. The suggested design approach is to appropriate and deconstruct established heritage motifs, symbols, and logos.
