Three years ago, four graphic designers @Monkey_Ben @Octopus zx @Defender @tryken_zen voluntarily decided to redesign the logos of CBA teams, so as to draw public attention to the designing of professional sports. What they didn’t expect was their work really caught the eye of the CBA official, and they were invited to join the CBA 2.0 designing programme led by Yao Ming, chairman of CBA. Therefore, the four graphic designers started the redesign programme including all 20 CBA teams in two groups, DEFPRO and TRYKEN DESIGN. In May 2019, the new designs of 9 teams were released by the CBA official. The redesign of Zhejiang Jinniu was made by TRYKEN DESIGN, and the rest 8 teams by DEFPRO. The following designs will be finished and released at the end of next season.
Starting from the perspective of sports industry, this programme hopes to take the international general patterns of designing and developing sports products for sports teams, so that sports fans feel closer to sports teams in no time. Changes in designs need to be made to meet the changing application scenarios during decades, thus it is imperative to update CBA team designs as well.
The CBA 2.0 programme redesigns the whole professional sports visual system. Besides the main logo, there will be one or several simplified vice-logos that apply to different scenarios, as well as partial logo, font logo, Chinese font, number font and their corresponding color schemes.
The designers brought in more simplified flatten design elements and conceptual symbols to make sports teams more distinctive. Meanwhile, cultural elements like the Golden Eye of Monkey King, the door gods and the Great wall in Beijing, the 'city of dragon' culture in Taiyuan,Shanxi, and the saying 'the Purple Air from the East' in Tai Mountain,Shandong were also adapted to their designs.
As an emerging designing category, we wish more attention could be given to the development of sports designing, because we do believe that designing could have positive influence on the development of sports industry.
