I was apart of a group from Massey that created an installation for the Festival of Transitional Architecture down in Christchurch in 2018. FESTA, the vibrant biennial celebration of urban creativity and community presented its public festival of architecture, design and food over Labour Weekend. It started after the earthquake to get people back into the city and make the most of the empty spaces around town. Each FESTA has had a different theme, the one we did had the theme of the future of food.
My role in the group was documentation photography and I was apart of the lighting and projection group. Being apart of the lighting and projection group required a lot of prototyping and testing. Especially since FESTA is outside as you need higher powered projectors and the lighting can look different to test done inside a lighting studio. The photos above are some of the testing we did along the way. The bottom two are lighting tests outside which turned out really well and showed that the lighting was going to work.

The photos below are of the our set up of FESTA on the Friday and Saturday. We had quite a big group which made getting everything done easier.
With the theme being the future of food we ended up focusing on the bar of the future. As a group we came up with the name CHOH-LAB. CHOH-LAB explores the 5000 year old history of human’s relationship with brewing. We’ve designed CHOH-LAB as a ‘Bar of the Future’ in which the sensory experience of brewing takes the drink out of the glass and creates unique environment in which to have a pint.

CHOH-LAB is an environment in which people are immersed in a micro environment focused solely on the experience of beer, and encountering it on a microscopic scale, as though, by choosing to move into the space, you had entered the drink itself.

The patterns, shapes and symbols in this installation are drawn from the imagery of beer at a microscopic level, giving a unique sense of the fermentation process. Further to this, the soundscape draws on data of current and historical trends in relation to beer consumption in New Zealand and internationally.

Inspired by the chemical symbols, blooming yeast cultures and fluid imagery of brewing we aim to celebrate the chemical love story of our ongoing and future relationship with yeast, brewing and beer.
