ROYAL CANADIAN MINT

April 23rd, 2019 commemorates 50 years since Canada took the first steps towards decriminalizing homosexuality. To honour this, the Royal Canadian Mint has created the “Equality Dollar”, which can be found in your change.

We teamed up with Cossette to help the Royal Canadian Mint mark this momentous event through illustration and animation. We all wanted to create a piece that emoted the significance of this event to the LGBTQI2 community and educate the country that there are still steps to be taken.

We wanted the animation to nod to the coin artwork by Joe Average, using a single line to represent the journey from persecution to acknowledgment and also create a sense of interconnectivity. But this also proved to be the biggest challenge of the project. We played with characters, lines, and colours to honour the original artwork, but also pushed the style slightly to help tell an important story. The look and feel of animation reminds us not only of a time in the past, but also our current reality.

Using hand-drawn, 2D and 3D animation, we were able to show the trials and subsequent celebration of the characters. This project was amazing because our team knows that there is still a lot more work to be done, however, this is a huge step towards a better future.
