The lovely JOANN Fabric & Craft Stores reached out to me to help design a couple digital illustrations for their two new openings in Dublin and Daly City, CA. This is the second piece I illustrated for them.
Their company mission is "Be the inspirational leader that helps everyone find their Happy Place through superior assortments, presentation, and service."
The first piece I did for them here focused on the logistical aspects of the Grand Opening. This time, I wanted to create something that spoke more to the lifestyle element.
I wanted to use words straight from their mission - Find Your Happy Place. Elements I had thought about incorporating were: rainbows, balloons, string lights, and art supplies of course. I'm a big fan of the paint brush texture so I wanted to figure out how I could incorporate that in this piece then surround the lettering with some of these elements.
I started with the second layout and created a script look for "Happy Place" and surrounded it with brushes and art supplies. This idea left me with weird empty spaces and I didn't feel the "lifestyle" vibe coming from it.
To touch on the lifestyle aspect, I literally looked at what my desk looked like -- plants, my phone, Polaroids and an Instax camera, and yup -- random art supplies. That hand was modeled after my own hand holding an Apple pencil while drawing this.
Here's the refined outline of the illustration.
