Books Still?

For this 2013 ISTD brief I wanted to explore the relevancy of the codex and consider how publishing and consumption of the written word has developed with the development of the web. I choose to consider the reasons we would still wish to print documents today and how the format and experience we consume and work with content is changing to this user obit modal.

Users eyes prefer printed type to backlit screens and are have evolved in the physical world so interaction of content in 3D space is more natural and intuitive that screen representation could ever be. Users regularly print articles from the web for offline reading and sharing but the process is very inconsistent.

I wanted reproduce articles in a standardised structure with a consistent good reading experience but still provide the room for the original publisher’s own tone of voice to come through, using custom typefaces and treatments.

The materials and binding were all sources from home office stores as so my target market could theoretically create their own collections of articles once the software and send the job to their standard A4 printer. Hole punch and fasten and users would be left with a functional, utilitarian publication of their own-curated content.
