The jury report states that Van Hooijdonk wins ‘the golden mangler’ because he makes his tenants pay high service charges, illegal mediation charges, and exorbitantly high rent. As he owns dozens of buildings in several large cities, this yields him quite the pay check.
The SP youth wanted to personally deliver the award to Van Hooijdonk’s mansion. However, he was unwilling to face the protestors. ROOD chairwoman Lisa de Leeuw summarises Van Hooijdonk’s character as a classic slumlord who turns an awful lot of profit whilst abusing his position of power over tenants.
Van Hooijdonk is a well-known character in Utrecht; he’s under fire regularly. There were, for example, numerous court cases because he’d threatened student tenants of his buildings. Ik ben actief bezig met het oplossen van de situatie met de krakers in het pand. Er is al meerdere malen geprobeerd om de krakers uit het pand te zetten, echter loop ik herhaaldelijk tegen gesloten deuren aan. Wat er nu speelt in de Catharinastraat is zeker geen situatie die aan mij is voorbij gegaan. Ik ben hoogstpersoonlijk bezig met het oplossen van het probleem wat hier speelt. Middels de juiste stappen hoop ik snel de buurt weer te kunnen helpen.
De situatie die nu speelt had geen plaats hoeven te vinden. Het is namelijk zo dat in 2017 het pand verkocht zou worden aan de investeringsmaatschappij Villa Boerebont van dj Tiësto (Tijs Verwest). Villa Boerebont zou het pand gaan huren waarna het zou dienen als een opvang die probleemjongeren helpt in onze samenleving.Ik zal de komende tijd mijn best blijven doen om de krakers uit het pand te krijgen.
