Mary Toft Mary Toft (Godalming, England, c. 1701-1763), also called Mary Tofts, was an English woman from Godalming, Surrey, who in 1726 was subject to considerable controversy when she cheated doctors who believed she had given birth to rabbits . Toft was pregnant in 1726, but then had a miscarriage. Apparently fascinated by a rabbit he had seen while working, she claimed that she had given birth to animals. Local surgeon John Howard was called to investigate and, after finding several animals, notified other prominent doctors. The matter attracted the attention of Nathaniel St. André, surgeon of the royal house of George I of Great Britain. St. Andre investigated and concluded that Toft was telling the truth. The king also sent surgeon Cyriacus Ahlers to see Toft, but Ahlers remained skeptical. By then quite famous, Toft was taken to London, where she was studied in depth. Under intense scrutiny and not producing more rabbits, she finally confessed the deception and was subsequently imprisoned (SOURCE: WIKIPEDIA)

Mary Toft (Godalming, Inglaterra, c.1701–1763), también llamada Mary Tofts, fue una mujer inglesa de Godalming, Surrey, que en 1726 fue objeto de una controversia considerable cuando engañó a los médicos que creyeron que había dado a luz conejos.

Toft estuvo embarazada en 1726, pero luego tuvo un aborto espontáneo. Aparentemente fascinada por un conejo que había visto mientras trabajaba, sostuvo que había dado a luz animales. El cirujano local John Howard fue llamado para investigar y, tras encontrar varios animales, notificó a otros médicos prominentes.
