Think Global, Act Local!
An awareness event
8th June 2019, World Oceans Day
Kovalam Beach, Trivandrum, Kerala
Oceans are an important part of our planet's ecosystem. But today oceans are badly getting affected due to human actions. This project is an attempt to trigger thoughts, facilitate discussions among people and initiate actions to conserve and protect marine life from pollution. Through a highly participatory and bottom-up approach, the aim of this event was to create awareness about the existence of life below water, eventually inspiring people to start talking about it, understand how humans are affecting them, spread the word and try to find out what every individual can do. From the starting till the end, throughout the design process, the local community members played a vital role, making this project raw and unique in its own way. The project helped in building relationships between different levels of society. Utilizing local skills, knowledge, and resources, participants collaborated and co-created a space that facilitated open conversations about marine pollution. The experience empowered the Mukkuvars to voice their opinions and share their indigenous local knowledge of ocean literacy with the public. This project is proof that only together can we protect Earth’s ultimate source of life.
Work in progress.
