Eros School 50th Anniversary book
Fifty Years of Giving Hope: the Eros School 50th anniversary book

Brief: create a 50th anniversary hardcover keepsake/coffee table-style book for Eros, a special needs school based in Cape Town, that includes images and information collected over the 50 years that the school has been operational so far (1967 - 2019). The book is to consist of 150 pages and photos are to take precedence. Information and captions are secondary, supporting the images. The book will be on sale to attendees at the school's 50th anniversary event held in September 2019 and all profit will be donated towards the school.

Challenge: I did the proofreading/editing of copy for this book, as well as the design so this project was quite demanding and time-consuming for me. The project officially started in March 2019 and print deadline was mid August 2019 (5 months). All chapters were being written by the client then passed on to me for proofing/editing and design as they were completed, which made it difficult to plan and enforce deadlines at times. Editing down copy and images for each section proved to be the biggest challenge as the book chapters were divided by the 5 decades of the school being in operation and the client wanted to have more-or-less the same number of pages dedicated to each chapter so all the decades received the same amount of attention. Since it is a public school that runs primarily on donations and funding, budget was also limited so being resourceful and cutting costs without sacrificing quality was key.

Outcome: my concept for this book was to imagine an ex-pupil or ex-employee of the school discovering this book while looking through a storage box or cleaning their bookshelf then feeling nostalgic and taking come time to sit at their dining room table, traveling down memory lane as they page through the book and journey through the decades. I wanted to create a feeling of history, nostalgia and progression into the present day, while making the book feel somewhat regal and special or 'limited edition', which is why I've used a combination of a grid style and scrap book/collage style of image placement, and calligraphy with a quality gold foiling effect on the cover.

It was a rush to the finish line, but in the end, I think this book turned out beautifully. I feel so honoured to have been a part of this process and to help produce a keepsake for such a momentous occasion and a good cause.
