National Museum of Indonesia Rebrand

BACKGROUND

Hi there! This project is a design exercise on The National Museum of Indonesia. The museum was built in 1862 from previous collections of a Dutch colonial organisation (Bataviaasch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen). After the independence of Indonesia (1945), the museum strives to inspire, educate, & raise awareness of the vast historical and cultural richness of Indonesia to local visitors and tourist alike.  The museum is popularly known by the name "Museum Nasional" and also "Museum Gajah" (Elephant Museum) because of an iconic elephant statue in front of the museum.

In this case study, i will explore alternative solutions for a new identity & brand based on the existing museum's vision / mission (to provide International standard of educational & recreational value & bring awareness of its collection to global audiences) and also implement new design solutions that can be applicable in today's digital era.

The illustrations are traced from the museum's real collection of mythological icons; Mahakala (left), Dvarapala (middle), Naka Paksi Liman (right).

CONCLUSION & EVALUATION

In this exercise I explored on how I could translate visual values from the past to the present. I decided using existing aspects of the museum's collection and present them in a more "contemporary" way that is accessible to all people. I put emphasis on the Illustrations in order to promote them outside of their physical presence in the museum (Social media, Merchandise, & Posters).

In the process, I encountered difficulty when deciding "keywords" for the logo design, since the museum itself already has different Identities attached to it (The Elephant Museum, National Museum, & Museum Nasional). I chose the latter because for the logo because it is the official museum's name in Indonesia.

I'm more than welcome for any feedback and comments. Hope you enjoyed viewing the work.

  THANK YOU!
