DOORS TO ESTONIA

In the quaint little town of Haapsalu on the Estonian Baltic coast, most of the old houses are built of wood.

Especially the doors are interesting. Not two doors are alike, no angles are straight, and many seriously need a paint-job. But isn't that just what makes them charming?

I have visited Haapsalu several times, because my mother in law was born there, out of a German-Baltic family, that lived in Estonia since the 16th century, but had to flee during WW2, since German roots meant either execution or deportation to the Gulag's under Soviet communism in the 1940's.

These photos are from 2008. Today Haapsalu is a fancy vacation-spot for Estonians and tourists, and some of the old wooden houses have now been renovated. Doors and windows have often been replaced with new ones made of plastic, thus loosing their rustic charm.
