The Wood II class asked students to purely experiment with the different machines in the shop, since the instructors, Mark Johnston and Charlie Appleton, don't want us to make a beautiful finished product but to have a deeper understanding of what the heavy machines can do through a series of "ugly" studies.

I spent most of the time playing around with table saw and lathe. Firstly, I used the table saw to create some repeated pattern and then glued the rearranged modules together. The different composition ends up in different negative space. Then, I put the piece on the lathe to further refine its form. Through this fun and challenging process, I comprehensively learn in what way should machine treat wood for a natural, elegant result. There is a strong connection between the wood property, composition, and the machining method.
