Hand-Drawn Map - Colored Pencil & Graphite

The opening slide for my presentation on drawing color hillshade
You can watch me describe the techniques for this drawing style here in a talk I gave at the North American Cartographic Information Society in October 2019.
Last year I shared my technique for drawing hillshade with graphite (pencil). Since then, I have explored a few different methods for drawing color hillshade. I just posted one of those techniques that I've been exploring on my new website. This method uses those graphite drawings as the base, or the starting point. So if you'd like to get started on color hillshade, you can check out the graphite process here. You can see a map completed in this method at the bottom of this project post. Just scroll down!
I presented this technique at the annual North American Cartographic Information Society conference (NACIS) last week, and am also posting some images from that presentation as well.
A sample graphite hillshade drawing that I drew of the mountain north of Knik Glacier in Alaska. These are the types of graphite drawings that I am applying colored pencil to for the color hillshade maps.
The eastern side of my map is hot and dry during the summer, and cold and snowy in the winter. It happens to be a wonderful area for rock climbing too.
Using a single color as a test for this method. This is a not-so-great photo of a map I was pretty happy about.
Another test of this technique around Ross Lake in Washington state.
During my presentation, I described the area that I was drawing and my connection to this geography.
The WIP current status of the colored-pencil map that I am showing in the videos in this project post. In addition to the hand-drawn color hillshade, I added vector data (roads, labels, lakes, rivers, etc.). When this project is completed, I will post the updated map here.
