The Guitar That Changed Everything

The true test of a beautiful, timeless shape is if it looks good in a diffuse grey!
The Guitar That Changed Everything: the year was 1954 and Fender introduced the Stratocaster. Aside from being a beautiful object of art, this guitar changed music forever. Fast forward to 2019 and we decided this would be a wonderful opportunity to improve our abilities with procedural wood. The 54 Start has some very unique parts that we also modeled for this project. Ultimately, we're planning a Start configurator. But, for now, here is a sample of the process of "building up" the body to the checked nitrocellulose lacquer finish.
Procedural wood offers so many options allowing us to really dial in a beautiful piece of raw ash.
Stain gets hand rubbed several times to add color and depth to the rich grains of the wood.
Nearly as famous as the guitar itself is this burst finish; in 1954 it was just black.
Adding a nitrocellulose lacquer finish with its signature trait of checking is important to creating realism and believability.
Putting all of the bits and pieces together, the guitar comes alive; you can almost hear it.
