I followed an intimidating roster of great talent into the Art Director position at Esquire. One of my goals was to try to achieve strong covers without aping George Lois or Henry Wolf, and I shot for a stronger visceral factor in the conceptual covers. I originally presented a prototype that was based on the work I did for the Art Director's Club. Although the editors admired it, they didn't think we would get away with it, so I introduced a little more common editorial language into the interior design.
