container village ROTIANA

This was my first assignment as project manager at Rotiana Social Investment, a farm with diverse activities to promote economical growth in Maasai land, in the region of Simanjiro, Tanzania.
Besides some existing structures for junior housing there was a need for accommodate bachelor workers or small families. As there were a number of unoccupied containers from the own farm the management decided to recycle these into houses. My concerns were related to the placement and orientation of the 20 containers, as its particular design was already agreed on. With this came of course the complete infrastructure plan for water, sewage and electricity but also the addition of separate modules for washrooms and cooking areas.
For heat protection the design included enough crossed ventilation, a second roof layer and some climbing plants covering the walls.

The farms own compressed earth bricks were used for the building of all the additions and interior partition walls. Its natural character harmoniously combined with the bright chosen colors of the containers. The social and recreational interpretation made the place an even more colorful and lively ambience. There was space for cloth drying, vegetable gardens, and a number of small-scale chickens farming.
