Fragility
A Self-portrait Paper Sculpture
Installation Art Final Year Project | A levels Art Elective Program

Year long project by Stephen, 2013
Synopsis
I always thought of myself as someone who was fragile. It didn't help that I was gentle in nature, generally quiet and very introverted. What's worst was that people kept saying how skinny I was. I sure was well fed and was brought up well, but I always struggled with my self image.

This art piece depicts my life in a moment of anguish and timidity - alone in a corner wallowing in fragility. Yet there is some hope in the light that emerges.

Paper often times is seem as a fragile material. But when strengthened with glue- it can be built up, strong... sometimes even stronger than metal (ref Shigeru Ban)

I hope to still say that my inner strength, the light within me is still strong. Amidst the darkness, it will pierce through and shine through all despair. May I continue to be strong in my self image and who I am.
The final piece was an installation piece made out solely of paper
An immersive experience where the audience was to empatise with this body, at a fragile position at the corner of the room
Installation process
All parts of the body was hand crafted using my own body as the armature
Experimentation process
Tried using all type of clay, wet paper, tape, glue, etc before perfecting the process
Thank you
