Melted Hot Glue

Sieraden
Queen Elizabeth, 2012
When making this neckpiece, I got inspirations from the ruffs of Elizabethan dresses. I was drawn to the high ruffs that emphasised the elaborate, artificial, and stylised fashion style of the Elizabethan period, but mostly the pride that both men and women had in wearing such clothes. In this neckpiece, I brought what is historic to contemporary and made something that is mine through the use of the material and the design. I used something that was flat to create form and finally have the body decide the form.

Frame Your Body, 2012
Frame Your Body is made to emphasize a woman’s upper body, precisely her neck area. The piece makes a rigid square border around the wearer’s neck when seen from the front, but has a turnaround in the back with very thin and delicate sheet of melted hot glue that covers one’s back. These characteristics of the piece represents aspects of a women who is strong on the outside but is sensitive and delicate in the inside. Also, the transparency and the burnt colour of the material becomes like textile.
Neck Corset, 2012
In making Neck Corset, I got inspirations from neck corsets. Although neck corsets are usually related to fetish and goth fashion items, they are meant to keep the chin high and the neck extended. Similar to Frame Your Body and Queen Elizabeth, this piece also has both toughness and femininity at the same time. The line, shape and form keep the wearer’s posture straight giving a rigid impression, yet it is soon soften by the texture and the colour of the material.
