This American Life
We were asked to create a book inspired by a story from This American Life, and I chose "Millions of Bubbles," a piece about cars- "tiny subculture(s) on wheels, glass and steel worlds rolling past each other." I made 6 books, each one about a separate car's story, and they go into a larger case (which has a pattern of cars and is covered in bubble wrap). When you first open one of them, you will only see transcribed text, and everything is black and white. The reader must figure out that they have to cut open each french-folded page to see the colorful illustrative spreads. Because each story is very different, the identity of each spread is very different- they are all unified by the form and design of the book jackets and text. Also, in the back of each small book there are usable bumper stickers that reflect the identity of their story.
