Synopsis:

Take Tasha on a magical journey to find the truth about her brother in this 2D Side-scrolling game. As you adventure through diverse areas from an old disposed graveyard to a Sophisticated Library Chapel, there's a surprise around every corner, that must be overcome by unique powers that Tasha's magical cards have within them.

Queen of Hearts is a Detailed Design Document that I created during my school year. The player takes on the role of Tasha, a girl from a remote magical village that gets buried due to an unknown cause. During the chaos in the village, she loses track of her brother, and the adventure begins with her searching for her brother but evolves into a much deeper resolve.

One of the main focuses to my design of the game was to stay true to using a 'card-related' theme throughout the game, which was hard in the beginning, but became a bit more managable as I started to explore my options. The main mechanic, the cards Tasha uses, are the basis of the combat system. The chosen card defines the type of attacks Tasha uses; whether she uses magic such as wind or water or weapons from swords to scythes, the player decides. I really liked the idea of using a traditionally analog tool within a video game.

With that design decision, I wanted to create a game that needed a level of tactical prowess from the player in order to make it a more engaging experience. I went about this by adding benefits and hardships depending on how you tried to defeat your enemies. Fire is weak to water, so a player would want to use water to attack a fire enemy, but I'd add the tactical side to this scenario by making alot of weak water enemies there alongside a strong fire enemy, making it more challenging to kill the little enemies trying to kill the bigger one, or by taking hits from all of them to chop down the small fry as quick as possible.
