Tsunami Evacuation Guide System Linked with Disaster Drill

Background / Concept
In the Great East Japan Earthquake (March 11, 2011), it has been pointed out that biases of residents such as “Tsunami will not come here” increased the number of victims. According to the survey conducted by Weathernews, it is assumed that approximately 49%* of victims didn’t evacuate at the Tsunami. By losing the lessons of past disasters, we are "biased" towards future disasters. BYB system links past disasters to future disasters, and break your biases.

How to use
In disaster drills, using BYB app and guide lights buried in the road, residents can easily experience past disasters and improve evacuation routes. The color of the guide light indicates danger of a current location linked with Tsunami hazard map, and helps residents feel that digital Tsunami hazard map and actual places are linked.
In time of disaster, using light and voice, the guide lights guide to optimal evacuation places to break your biases that prevents quick evacuation. BYB system is not only possible to evacuate safe and speedy, but also "improve" and "maintain" the regional awareness of disaster prevention.
System / STRUCTURE
In disaster drills and actual evacuations, using the BYB app, residents can easily experience disaster drills and comment on the map. BYB system analyzes resident's route data and creates optimal evacuation routes. The guidance directions are recorded in each guide lights. In time of disaster, through the wireless mesh network system, disaster informations are transmitted to all guide lights. Also each guide lights are self-supporting with a solar cell panel and battery for reliable evacuation guide.
Design Process
We have approached with "initiative evacuation guidance carried out by residents” and we focused on the idea that use evacuation drill. We designed the guide light and BYB app with great care to make disaster drill easy and not to promote biases. By prototypes using Arduino and LED, we conducted tests on both unmistakable way to guide direction and the high visibility. Finally, we created a movie prototype to visualize how BYB system will be used.
