HOW THE ARTS WERE CRAFT

This design is defined as “a social and artistic movement” that developed from the 19th century in England. It can be found in architecture and decorative arts such as local materials and handcrafted objects (Yourdictionary.com, 2019).

Arts and craft movement were first developed by the British designers. Before arts and craft existed, the manufactured goods were poor in design and quality. The workers would only produce objects into a beautiful style if individual craftsmanship could be revived, according to Morris, Ruskin, and others.  In that way people’s lives could be improved and simultaneously give decent work for the craftsmen if the workers produced stunning looking objects. Usually the style of the arts and craft forms are angular and or rectilinear that has artificial decorative motifs reminiscent of Islamic and medieval design, which was inspired by the historic sources of other designers. (Char.txa.cornell.edu, 2019).

Today we still find arts and crafts movement in architecture and decorative arts. In simplified and stylized ways, the work of arts and crafts tend to focus on nature. Objects like ceramics, furniture, and other goods succeeded with traditional methods of production which are block printing and wood carving. Any work that have stylized patterns that tend toward angular forms, straight, or rectilinear lined is arts and crafts movement. Images are referenced from elements such as animals, insects, birds, leaves, vines, or flowers. Also, colours comes from similar earth tones, like rich reddish terra cottas, browns, and deep green. (Study.com, 2019).

This is an example that shows that we are still using patterns in art in modern times. We'll find patterns almost everywhere: materials such as clothing, blankets, carpets, handbag, etc.
