Radical Social Change:
Homelessness with Utopian Provotype.

Background
Homelessness means that you are without a home. Definitions of a home include: “one’s place of residence,” and “a house, apartment, etc. where you live that is considered as property that you can buy or sell.” Home provides shelter from the elements, and helps individuals meet other basic needs like eating and sleeping. While we believe that a home should still help people meet their basic needs, we want to flip the understanding of how people acquire, maintain and grow their homes. Currently, creating a home requires resources and money and quickly establishes a social hierarchy between the “haves” and “have nots.” Through our provotype, we hope to establish more housing equality where the right to a home is determined by factors other than money.
In our utopia, a space of your own is a birth right. When you are born, you are given a 30 square meter space that contains all of the basics that you need to be comfortable, safe, and healthy.
This space is moveable, can be attached to other’s spaces, and can be modified to meet the needs of the individual depending on your living arrangement and preferences.
It can also be collapsed to the size of a napkin so if you ever move, you can simply take your space with you.
While each individual receives 30 square meters at birth, it is possible to grow your space—not through money but instead through positive actions. Each year after birth, the government assesses your actions from the year.
If you have contributed net positive actions to society, the size of your home grows relative to the impact of your actions. Similarly, if you contribute net negative actions to society, the size of your space can shrink. However, no space can ever be smaller than 30 square meters and can never exceed 120 square meters per person. Finally, when you die, the space disappears so no one receives the benefit of inheritance. Through this model, every individual has the right to a home that can only be grown through positive actions rather than money.
