In 2017, VinTaTa Animation Studio launched “The Wanted Writer”, a nationwide contest in search of the first crowdsourced cartoon in Vietnam. Our team proposed "Monta in the Weird Galaxy", a light-hearted series about a monkey accidentally flipping King of Heaven’s dining table and thus creating a galaxy out of the scattered dishes. Surpassing over 800 contestants, we won the first prize and had our idea brought to life.
But that was not the best part of the story. The real win to me was that through the thoughtfully crafted characters, we brought to the young audience not just an animation, but an ode to nonconformity. A monkey whose speaking tail is his alter ego, a vegan shark, a hairless sheep, a color-blinded chameleon, and an acrophobic woodpecker; together, these misfits make the Weird Galaxy a place to celebrate diversity, teaching kids to take everybody as they are.
