Game Audio : The Forest

Audio project : The Forest
headphones on.
The Forest is an experiment in audio suggestion.
This is a project I made to learn how to use binaural and ambisonic audio to enhance my game experiences, and find out if I could create an environment with the least amount of graphics possible - only block design and some minimal lighting.
I used FMOD Studio and Google's Resonance Audio plugin in order to achieve and monitor the different atmospheres that seamlessly transition from one to the other.

Some sounds are 2D (the sound is played, without any difference caused by distance or angle), some are in binaural 3D (the sound originates from one point and has falloff, meaning it is affected by the listener's distance and angle).

Additionally, I added some ambisonic sounds, which are affected by angle of listening but not distance.
How the birds in the clearing work : on start, each speaker is assigned a random bird. The chirps are based on Scattered instruments, which allow controlled randomness in how far away and how far apart the chirps are separated. The birds have one to three chirps, with slight pitch and volume randomization to increase their believability.
