Final Project : COMPILE
Final Project : COMPILE - edition of 14 one-page zines ( Xerox prints ), 11" x 17", & 4.25" x 5.25" (folded), 2019.
Exercise 4 : PRODUCE
Exercise 4 : PRODUCE - digital composition utilizing manipulated scans, photographed objects, and glitched images, 11" x 17",  2019.
For this project we came up with 20 words to describe ourselves. After doing so, we used those words whether they were colors, objects, or ideas. We combined them to make a poster that really represents who each of us are. My project included things that I love: fortune cookies, puzzles, the ocean, the colors: teal, and red. It also included a hand that slowly got blurry, which represents my quietness and my nervous jitters. The leaves represent the idea of fall, and my love for the wind and nature.
This project was a fun way to use all of the things that we learned in this class. I enjoyed exploring the concepts within Photoshop, and within my own head. We really had to think about the way we placed objects, and how they worked with others. We also had to focus on what they meant to us. Even though exploring was a bit difficult at times, I am happy with the finished piece.
Exercise 3 : MANIPULATE
Exercise 3 : MANIPULATE - original digital image ( no effects applied ), 8.5" x 11", 2019.
Exercise 3 : MANIPULATE - glitched digital image ( Distortion + Compressor + Echo + Invert effects applied ), 8.5" x 11", 2019.
Exercise 3 : MANIPULATE - glitched digital image ( Invert + Wah Wah + Compressor + Invert effects applied ), 8.5" x 11", 2019.
The photograph I chose to glitch was a picture of yellow flowers. They were the flowers that my mom put on my grandpa’s gravestone. Every year on Memorial Day, we buy those same yellow flowers. Some of my mom’s family gathers around his grave and we talk to each other about memories, or events in our lives, or we sit silently. The photo has a deep meaning to me, and it almost seemed wrong messing with the integrity of it.
I found that the glitches actually gave the picture more meaning. The almost completely black and white glitch revealed the darkness associated with the object displayed in the photograph. I thought the small white strip added a touch of lightness and beauty. In terms of carrying meaning, that would likely be the best corrupted photo. In terms of glitch or effect itself, I thought that the (lighter background with blue and pink flowers) was the most successful.
Exercise 2 :  Interpret
Exercise 2 : INTERPRET - digital collage ( digitally manipulated photographs of physical objects ), 11" x 8.5", 2019.
For this project, I used materials that were on or near my desk at work. Some are office supplies, and others are just objects I decorated my desk with. It was not only convenient, but it also makes the assignment a little more personal; using at least one or two objects that I see every day, and that represent me. The project was to arrange those objects on a digital level, in a way that roughly matches our previous assignment. We created something similar to our ID cards, but this was more of a composition.
As I was picking objects, it was difficult to find things that would best represent the ideas in the ID card. Some objects that I used worked well for the meaning I was attempting to portray. The sunglasses are my favorite objects. The sunglasses represent the picture portion of the ID, and it shows that I’m still unsure about who I am, and want to be. The effects that I placed on my composition also express deeper meaning.
Exercise 1 : IDENTIFY
Exercise 1 : IDENTIFY - analog collage ( laminated color photocopies ), 2" x 3.5", 2019.
We were instructed to make copies of different cards that we carry around with us. Then we used those copies to make a new id. I cut and pasted the parts and pieces. Then I laminated the final collage. The hope was to create something that better represents who I am.
I like my name written in cursive, so I chose to use my signature. I don’t just attend Weber, I work on campus as well. The wave-like blue and green lines are supposed to represent book pages, as it is the image from my library card. It also represents my love for stories of every nature. I’ve only ever lived in Utah, it is my home. My picture is chopped up and flipped because who I am changes constantly depending on how comfortable I am with the people around me. Even though it may not look like it, this card truly does represent me.
