Branding design of Crux, İstanbul based handcrafted pottery design studio.

The founder of Crux, the ceramic artist Pınar Sağlav’s work is inspired by the traditional Japanese art of Kintsugi which is the art of precious scars. Kintsugi technique uses liquid gold to bring together the pieces of a broken pottery item and enhances the breaks. In this technique scars become what one wants to exhibit and emphasize rather than to hide.
Pınar perceives these scars as the essence of resilience because she knows what it means to be “broken” and how hard one has to fight in order to get each and every piece back together. Yet how these scars that once made one suffer turns into a medal of honor as she has beaten cancer two times. She transforms her own scars into a piece of art via pottery.
The inspirational story of Pınar and her main design element Knitsugi has also been the crux of the branding design. The gold foil lines that’s been used on the printed material are the representations of the scars. The bold and strong logotype represents Pınar’s attitude towards life and her warrior character. Although the logotype is very modern, the serifs refer to the roots of this traditional art, therefore blending the modern and the traditional in the same pot.
