Kujenga

For the 2019 PG Bison competition, designers were to investigate, conceptualize and develop a residential design model, aimed at middle-income earners, to help facilitate their housing program.
Our aim was to improve the perceptions of urban compaction and attract the growing band of middle-income earners to the city.

Derived from the Swahili word Kujenga, Jenga blocks are typically rectangular wooden blocks that gets stacked into a tower, of which the players carefully remove block by block until the tower tumbles over. Not only is this a challenging structure to imitate, but it is also a very familiar shape and concept to people - which makes the building more approachable. Dark Mahogany Corian is used to represent the wood of Jenga blocks in the motorized sun screen panels. This allows the residents to be in charge of how much sunlight and privacy they would like, which will cause the building to look different every day.
