Jewelry designer Gretchen Schields draws onher passion for the decorative arts and her travels to the romantic kingdomswhere they flourished as inspiration for her exotic jewelry collections. Gretchen's fantasy-filled designs chronicle her journey from a fairy-tale childhood in Asia, Africa and Australia to becoming an artist of compelling scope and expressiveness. Her designs speak to the woman who, like the artist herself, is possessed of enviable grace and sophistication, with a flair for making an unequivocal statement.
Gretchen's necklaces range from tribal finery to winsome pearl ephemera. Her styles are versatileand unique. In Japanese costume the adornment is not jewelry. The textiles are the jewels. Gretchen treasures fabric as much as her beads and pearls and has created a separate jewelry line fittingly called Silk Road to embrace her stunning mixed-media, featherweight designs of Asian silks and Indonesian ikats.
Gretchen Schields is a graduate of Art Center College of Design and has been featured in Ornament magazine, various books, TV interviews and articles, She works in her Laguna Beach studio, a beautifully decorated space that is home to her cabinet of curiosities: Asian and African art, carpets, sculpture and antiquities.
