한국 최초로 서양화를 전공한 서양화 화가이고 문필가이며 근대적 여권론을 펼치고 독립운동을 했던 운동가이다. 여성에게만 정조를 강요하는 가부장적 사회를 질타하는 글과 그림으로 ‘여자도 사람’임을 끊임없이 주장했다. 그는 여자 역시 남자, 여자 이전에 한 사람의 인간으로 대우해 줄 것을 거듭 주장했다.

She was South Korea's first Western painter, writer, feminist and activist to stage an independence movement against Japan. She constantly criticized the patriarchal society for forcing chastity only on women with her writings and paintings. She has repeatedly argued that women should be treated as human beings before men and women.

소설, 시, 희곡분야를 넘나드는 작가이자 기자, 번역가였던 김명순은 기생의 자식으로, 자유연애를 주창했다는 이유로 당시 많은 남성작가들의 혐오와 질시, 핍박의 대상이었다. 천재 작가였던 그는 뛰어난 문학성을 지녔지만 그간 문단 내에서 중요 인물로 평가받지 못했다.
