When hearing about this assignment i got extremely excited. "A Midsummers Night Dream" is amazing in the setting it was written in but when i thought of putting my own twist I thought of two words... NEW YORK!
Oberon and Puck would be from an abandoned subway while Titania and her "crew" would be from Time Square where its all bright lights and big city.
In “A Midsummers Night Dream” by William Shakespeare my concept forms the location to modern day New York, New York. The two groups of fairies in this story come from opposite neighborhoods. Titania’s group of fairies, including Moth, Cobweb, Mustardseed, and Peaseblossom, are from Time Square. However Oberon and Puck are from the dirty, abandoned, and muggy streets. Their middle ground where most of this story takes place is in the suburbs. The “forest” in the original play is represented now by Central Park. These fairies greatly influence this play and the characters in it. They interfere by doing various things from changing the intent of people’s hearts to giving a man the head of an ass.
Oberon is the king of the fairies. He is mischievous as is his fairy Puck. He would be dressed in dark blues, black, and grey. He would be wearing loose modern clothing such as dark colored jeans and a long black hoodie. He has silver hair and light colored skin.
Puck, Oberon’s fairy, would be wearing many grays and blues. He would have on jeans and a tattered hoodie. His clothing would be very loose fitted. He would also be wearing solid black Converse. In my opinion he is cheerful yet extremely mischievous, and tries to show off with the havoc he causes. Puck and Oberon’s clothing reflect the muggy and tattered streets where they are from.
Puck and Oberon would rock the hoddies and jeans trying to sink in to the crowd, going unnoticed.
Titania is the queen of the fairies and also a very kindhearted fairy. She is very upbeat and has a “bright” personality. She wears bright neon rainbow colors. She has very shiny silver hair . Her style is very modern. She is typically in a skirt or dress that is very fitted. Her makeup is also very colorful and bright. All of her fairies, including her, are typically very cheerful.
Moth is one of Titania’s fairies. She would mainly be in blues and purples. I see her as being one of the older looking fairies. She would have long black hair with blue streaks and minimal yet bright makeup. She would be in bright skinny jeans and a long sleeve shirt. Also, she would be wearing bright high-top Converse.
Cobweb would be in mainly silvers and navy blues. She would have medium length brown hair that is pulled back into a ponytail. She would be wearing skinny jeans, a t-shirt with an undershirt and also colored converse. She would be older but not older than Moth.
Peaseblossom is one of the younger fairies. She is dressed in pinks and greens. She is very cheerful and always has a smile on her face. She has curly blonde hair and a headband. She is wearing a dress with pantyhose and bright colored Converse.
Mustardseed is the youngest fairy. She would be dressed in yellows and oranges. She would be wearing a skirt and short sleeve shirt. She would have long blonde hair and bright colored hairpins. She would also be wearing converse.
The other faries would be dressed in bright colors representing the many neon lights of Time Square.
