Design With Color

For my color palette, I picked five different colors. I chose a dark blue, a light blue, a reddish-orange, a tan, and a purplish-grey. I picked these colors for my selection first because blue is my favorite color so I had to include it. Another reason I picked it was because all these colors were fairly neutral, with none of them being too vibrant. But when I put them together into a composition, they make each other stand out in ways that they couldn’t when they were alone, which I liked.

After I chose the colors, I first created my pop art design. I used a relatively simple portrait of myself for it and followed the steps outlined in class to make it.
For the six compositions, I started off by creating pattern design ones first. For each of these four, I started off with a basic shape, such as a triangle, circle, or hexagon. From there I would expand the pattern, making sure that it was symmetrical on all sides. After the class critique we did, I went back and changed some of the patterns from the suggestions I got. Since everyone seemed to like the circle pattern composition the best, I made another one, but with a different color layout and some design changes made.

I realized I seemed to have the pattern compositions down, so I wanted to try something new and not just keep repeating myself. I decided to draw over some photographs I had taken earlier. I did this using the same colors with the brush, pencil, and line tools. I left the original black and white image below these new drawings, to help give some detail. It was a challenge to be restricted only to these 5 colors, even when the photographs had many other colors originally.
