WLM Editorial Work

After graduating College in June, I sought out a placement in the industry to further my knowledge and experience. I landed a placement with the editorial design company White Light Media, where I worked alongside designers and editors who are all experienced in the industry.

WLM gave me a couple mock briefs to work on during my time there. This allowed me to work in a professional environment while the designers gave me pointers and advice on my work.
HOT RUM COW:

Is a self published magazine that WLM worked on as a personal project with the focus being on the drinks sector. I was given an article that was in their most recent issue which centred around intoxication in society and how it's changed throughout time.

I first worked through my sketchbook coming up with concepts and rough drafts of what the style of the article might be.
I structured it as a story, with the text flowing alongside the images. This gave me an excellent opportunity to work with inDesign, something I hadn't had much experience with in college, and better my overall understanding of editorial design.
MAERSK:

WLM give a brief out to all of their placements, which is to design an article for the Maersk drilling company with 4 double page spreads. Images were provided but it was entirely up to me how they will be used.

Working firstly in my sketchbook, I looked into the company, possible concepts, font pairings, and eventually the final design of the spreads.
The final product was meant to capture the rough gritty tasks that come alongside being on an oil rig, which I feel I managed to capture quite well. I worked specifically on how the text and images would work in tandem as part of a double page spread.
