Play Analysis: Picasso at the Lapin Agile by Steve Martin is a witty play that takes place in Paris, the year 1904. It begins with the bartender, Freddy, wiping the bar down and Gaston, a man well in age, sits around singing. Freddy and Gaston converse until Gaston has to go to the restroom (which he does a lot throughout the play). Einstein, age 25, enters and announces that he is waiting for a lady. Albert Einstein was an important physicist who introduced the theory of relativity which helped unlock the many mysteries of the universe. He was a very influential and important person in the world of science. Germaine, Freddy’s girlfriend, enters not long after Einstein. She and Freddy have a very brief discussion about her always being late. Next, Suzanne who holds a fiery passion for Picasso enters. She spends most of her time in the play talking and waiting for Picasso, who she had a one night stand with and received a cubist drawing of herself from. Other significant characters that enter include Sagot who is an art dealer, Schmendiman who thinks he is on the brink of genius but is really a comical, feebleminded man, and the Countess who is the brilliant, red-headed lady that Einstein is waiting for. Eventually Picasso, the “talk of the town,” enters. Pablo Picasso was a Spanish artist who co-founded the cubist movement. His most famous pieces are Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Guernica. He was very influential to the world of art and dominated Western Art in the twentieth century. In the play, many conversations take place. The people in the bar talk about women, sex, science, and art. Einstein and Picasso, both on the brink of amazing ideas, meet in the bar. They have an interesting conversation about the value of art and science, along with the other characters. Toward the end of the play, the Visitor, a man from the future, enters and shows Picasso and Einstein their future. The two men form a friendship seeing that they both will make history one day. The play ends with everyone toasting to the twentieth century. Costume Concept: When: 1904 Where: Paris The clothing design is going to be from the time period of 1904 and mostly casual.
