Concept & Design

Inspired by UNESCO's »Memory of the World«-programme

The overarching theme for my Master's programme is inspired by UNESCO's »Memory of the World«-programme. The register of documents, founded in 1992, comprises contributions from all over the world: valuable book collections, manuscripts, scores, unique copies, image, sound and film documents. The selection criteria are strict. The document must be of worldwide significance, authentic, unique and irreplaceable for humanity. Thus a contribution can document the scientific breakthrough in the study of a disease, the opening up of new areas on earth, significant inventions or major social changes. Behind every contribution lies a complex background that in one way or another reflects a major turning point in human history.
Unfortunately, compared to the conservation programmes of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, the programme receives much less attention. Therefore I have made it my task to look for ways with which one can arouse attention and sensibility, provide clarity and communicate information by targeted design.

Transparency: The programme should not only protect the documents, but also make them accessible to everyone. Clarity and transparency are essential, which is why this aspect is integrated into the corporate design as a theme. Transparent materials are attractive and create interest, but do not push themselves into the foreground and leave room for the unique contributions.

The developed logo highlights the character of the »Memory of the World«-programme: A superior programme consists of a range of individual documents. The logo is variable, so each document receives a version with a different lighting situation, adapted from the general sign. The typography »Memory of« can be completed with the name of the individual document.
