Digital Choreography 'Organised Chaos'

Emily Kirwan - Digital Media Arts (MA) at the University of Hertfordshire

Final Major Project: Digital Choreography - 'Organised Chaos'
A project undertaken in part fulfilment of my Postgraduate Media Award.

For my Final Major Project I choreographed a dance using digital media, exploring the theme of organisation and chaos. The piece sought to investigate a new approach to choreography, using video editing software to create a group dance.

My project puts forward the concept of choreographing a dance using computer software, to reduce dependence on dancers during the creative process, and allow choreographers to explore and revise ideas, formations, timings, and visuals, before working with dancers in the studio.

Technology allowed me to explore and amend the dance in my own time, without the need of dancers present. Once the edited video was completed, dancers then interpreted the piece from scores and visuals during a two-day workshop, before staging a final performance of 'Digital Choreography'.
